Four horses. Four clear rounds. One South African nomination.

That was the outcome for Bo Reed, a Grade 11 learner at HeronBridge College, after the final national showjumping selection event at Kumusha Stables in 23 June.

Bo has earned South Africa’s showjumping nomination for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games after producing the strongest performance in a final trial that included Chazelle Smith, Claudia Wagner and Jaimi-Lee Joseph.

Why the final trial mattered

The selection format placed riders under a demanding technical test. Bo was the only rider to complete clear rounds on all four horses, which set her apart in the final evaluation.

In showjumping, changing horses adds pressure. Riders must adjust quickly to each horse’s rhythm and stride while maintaining accuracy and composure over the course. Clear rounds across four horses therefore point to control and adaptability on the day.

HeronBridge College also extended congratulations to Chazelle, Claudia and Jaimi-Lee, whose selection for the final trial placed them in a strong group of young South African riders.

A demanding route to Dakar

South Africa’s showjumping selection criteria require that eligible athletes fall within the required birth-date range, hold membership in good standing, complete the required selection paperwork and meet FEI capability requirements through qualifying performances.

That context gives Bo’s nomination weight. It follows a national selection process in a sport where riders have to combine technical skill and judgement under pressure.

HeronBridge College also recognised Bo’s coach, Ronnie Healy, whose guidance and support contributed to the achievement.

The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will take place in Senegal from 31 October to 13 November 2026, with equestrian listed as part of the programme.
