Breaking into the world’s top 1000 junior tennis players takes more than one good week.

For Alessio Vigoriti, the climb to a career-high ITF Junior World Ranking of No. 995 followed a 2026 season that combined provincial team tennis with international tournament play on the ITF Junior Tour.

The HeronBridge College learner competed in two ITF J60 tournaments in Botswana in April, adding ranking points and match experience against international junior opposition.

Ranking points in Gaborone

At the J60 Gaborone tournament, Alessio reached the boys’ singles semifinals after beating Rhys Vorwerk and Luca Braun. His run ended against second seed Daniel Brink.

The result lifted him to World No. 1216 in the ITF Junior World Rankings.

His form carried into the following week, where he won all his round-robin matches to qualify for the quarterfinals. He reached the singles quarterfinals and the doubles semifinals, adding another set of results to his Botswana campaign.

Those performances helped him reach No. 995.

Provincial team success

Alessio’s season also included selection for Central Gauteng at the Under-19 Interprovincial Tournament in Pretoria.

Central Gauteng won all their pool matches before defeating KwaZulu-Natal in the first playoff round. For Alessio, the event added a provincial team component to a year already shaped by individual international competition.

The combination matters in junior tennis. The ITF Junior circuit is the main international under-18 pathway, with players earning points at recognised events around the world. Results depend on travel, preparation, ranking pressure and the ability to back up performances across consecutive tournaments.
