The Curiosity Approach

The Curiosity Approach incorporates the importance of uninterrupted play as a method of learning, by letting a child’s natural curiosity and interests guide the learning experience. This involves a re-conceptualised indoor and outdoor environment, loose-parts play areas, a sensory playground and real-life objects to explore, rather than unimaginative, single-purpose toys.

By encompassing aspects of Reggio Emilia, The Steiner Education Approach, Te Whāriki, and the Montessori Method of Childhood Education, The Curiosity Approach aims to shift the teaching philosophy from overly structured and outcomes-based, to learning through play.

 

How does the Curiosity Approach work in practice?

We are replacing most of the tables and chairs in the classrooms to create space for themed pockets of learning and furniture made from natural material. When entering the classroom, children would be drawn to various play stations designed by teachers to arouse their curiosity. Children will be allowed to explore as they wish, with teachers guiding them to ensure that they still gain exposure to a multitude of skills and learning facets.

 

How will children’s progress be monitored?

With the Curiosity Approach the teacher develops a closer, more nurturing relationship with each child and monitors them continuously, rather than at a predetermined period. Our regular excellent curriculum will remain in place, as well as current parent feedback processes and quarterly progress reports.
