Curro Hillcrest is a leading independent school in Hillcrest, Durban that provides high-quality education to learners from Grade R to Grade 12, at the end of which the IEB examination is written. With small class sizes, excellent facilities, and strong devotional foundations, our enhanced curriculum provides learners with 21st-century skills as well as vital soft skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving. Our classrooms and teaching methods are based on project-based learning.
Our nursery school, Curro Castle Hillcrest, offers an integrated play-based programme to learners from 2 years to 5 years. View their webpage to see how we apply our internally-developed programme to support your child’s early learning and development goals.
What do we offer?
At Curro Hillcrest, we balance academic excellence with sports- and cultural well-being, thereby ensuring that learners develop into well-rounded individuals. Our learners benefit from dedicated teachers, experienced sports coaches, superior facilities, and specialised offerings such as Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) and Computer Studies.
With a strong history of achievement in music and art, as well as carefully selected teachers and coaches, we go to great lengths to ensure that each learner is stimulated in their areas of interests. Our learners also benefit from having isiZulu as an additional language option.
We encourage project-based learning
Our classrooms and teaching methods are based on project-based learning, which is designed to let learners discover the learning material through experiments or self-interaction. Our teachers go to great lengths to encourage learners to engage with the work themselves, as experience ensures greater learning than merely memorising.
Which activities do we offer?
We believe that participation in activities plays an important role in promoting health, team-awareness, discipline and self-confidence in addition to physical and social well-being. Therefore, our wide variety of sports and cultural activities – including Curro Create programmes – are offered in superior facilities such as an aquatics centre, and presented by professional tutors/coaches. Some cultural activities are incorporated in the daily programme, while our sports and cultural scholarships aim to provide funding opportunities to high-achieving learners.
Which facilities do we have?
Our school was designed with state-of-the-art facilities. Classrooms are equipped with projectors, as well as 21st-century technology to support specialised subjects such as Computer Studies and Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD). Our sports and cultural activities are hosted in well-maintained facilities such as an aquatics centre, gymnasium, and more.
How do we apply 21st-century learning?
At Curro Hillcrest, we embrace 21st-century learning. Children learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process. Therefore, our classroom setups and teaching methods encourage learners to interact with the learned material by making discoveries for themselves or testing information they had just read. By experiencing the work rather than simply memorising it, learners gain a greater understanding of the concepts and are able to apply their minds in an exam as well as in practice.
Furthermore, many of our specialised subjects develop 21st-century skills that will greatly benefit learners in their future workplace. These subjects include Engineering Graphics and Design, Information Technology, and Visual Arts
